A ministry which covers all needs of children is Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. This school is a Christian campus where children live, attend school, and attend church. It was founded in 1921 as a nonprofit organization for children who do not have homes by someone who knew the needs of orphans best: Sam Hurley, an orphan himself. The school accepts no funds from federal or state organizations, but is completely funded through charity. It is led by a Board of Trustees composed of local community members.
The children who attend Mountain Mission School receive a quality Christian Education from preschool through high school. Drop out rates are low for the school and 90% of graduates go on to higher education pursuits after graduation. It is estimated over 20,000 children have been helped since the founding of the school in 1921. Some students are orphans with no parent, others may have living parents who are unable to provide care for them. Students can be placed into the school by a parent or court. The students are not adopted by the school. No matter how they arrive at Mountain Mission, all students have one thing in common: the need to be loved, cared for, and raised in a good home environment where they will receive an education and training in Christian values. Students are accepted without regard to race, ability, gender or age. Some students live here a lifetime, other students only a short while. However long the child needs care, all become members of the Mountain Mission family.
